How to write a CV

Below are some useful tips on what to include. Please read through these points carefully and you will end up with the perfect covering letter and CV.
You will need:

A covering letter
A detailed CV

The Covering Letter

You must not give too much information away at this point, the idea of a covering letter is to introduce yourself and your CV. You can write about your interests and why you want this particular job and you can go into enough detail to make the employer think it’s worthwhile inviting to an interview. Your covering letter should be no longer than one page. Make sure you spell check your letter and re-read it thoroughly so it makes sense.

The CV

This is crucial information. This document is the decider of whether you get the interview or not, so here are a few points on how to write the CV.

  • Start with writing personal details about yourself and contact details.
  • You will then need to write a Personal Profile. This is a short description of yourself, outlining any relevant skills and experience.
  • Write about your education and qualifications.
  • Your career history, you should have your jobs in the order of the most recent, including your responsibilities, where you worked and what you achieved at the company.
  • Add 2 professional references.
  • Write about your hobbies / interests. This is important for the employer to understand what you are like as a person.
Remember to check your spelling thoroughly and make sure your CV stands out so that attracts attention. Be brief and factual - don’t write about one subject for too long. And REMEMBER leave something to say in your interview. Your CV should be no longer than two pages.

So you have got an interview

Prior to your interview you should do your “homework” on the company you are applying to work for. Most companies have websites, so look on the internet and look for their background and what they do. Make sure you understand all the duties that are required for the job so you are not caught off guard because they will probably ask you “Why do you think you will be good enough for this job?”. You must be honest.

Be sure you know exactly what you have written in your CV so you are prepared if the interviewer asks you questions about your previous experience. Take time to find out where your interview is being held. You must be on time, but preferably early and remember the name of the person interviewing you.

What to wear?

It is one of the hardest things knowing what to wear for an interview. You need something that is smart, appropriate and impressionable. Here are a few tips on what to wear:

  • Wear a business suit in a plain conservative colour
  • Make sure clothes are clean and ironed
  • Wear clean scuff free shoes (black is better)
  • Keep hair clean and tidy and make-up plain
  • Keep jewellery to a minimum
  • Don’t wear too much perfume or aftershave

What will they ask?

Here are some of the classic questions asked at an interview ;

  • Tell me about yourself
  • What interested you in this position?
  • Why did you leave your last job?
  • Tell me what duties you had at your last job?
  • What are your main achievements at work?
  • What have you accomplished that you are most proud of?
  • What differences can you make to this company?
